Yoga Therapy for Strong Bones

For anyone who has received a poor bone density result or has been diagnosed with either Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, the future can feel daunting. What does this mean for my future? Will my bones become brittle? How will it impact on my quality of life? Will this worsen as I age?



Whilst increasing calcium intake may be one option, there are many other things we can do to empower ourselves. Nutrition is vital in helping us improve our strong bones. We will discuss nutrition in a separate post.


Yoga therapy too can be helpful in promoting better bone health by improving flexibility, promoting stronger balance, and thereby, reducing the risk of fractures.


Here's how yoga therapy can help:

  1. Flexibility and Joint Health: Yoga involves various stretches and movements that can help maintain or improve joint flexibility, making daily activities easier and reducing the risk of injury.

  2. Gentle Weight-Bearing: Certain yoga poses involve supporting your body weight on your arms, legs, and spine. This low-impact weight-bearing activity can help stimulate bone growth and improve bone density over time.

  3. Strengthening Muscles: Yoga therapy focuses on using your own body weight to build strength. Strengthening the muscles around your bones can provide additional support and protection for your muscular-skeletal system, reducing the risk of injury and fractures.

  4. Improved Posture: Yoga therapy emphasizes alignment and body awareness. Practicing proper alignment can help improve posture, which in turn reduces the risk of spinal compression fractures often associated with osteoporosis.

  5. Balance and Coordination: Yoga poses that require balance and coordination can enhance stability, reducing the likelihood of falls that can lead to fractures, especially in those with decreased bone density.

  6. Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can negatively impact bone health. Yoga therapy's focus on deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help lower stress levels, which indirectly benefits bone density.

  7. Customization: A skilled yoga therapist practitioner can tailor a yoga routine to an individual's needs, taking their specific condition and limitations into account. This personalized approach ensures that the practice is safe and effective.

  8. Avoiding High-Risk Poses: Not all yoga poses are suitable for individuals with low bone density. A Yoga Therapy practitioner will avoid poses that involve forward bends, twists, or extreme back bends which may be too intense for someone with poor bone density and will design a program that prevents strain on the spine.

  9. Regular Practice: Consistency is key. Regular yoga practice over time can lead to cumulative benefits for bone health, flexibility, and overall well-being.

Our Strong Bones Program is designed for women and men who currently living with or at risk of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. This is a 5-Week program that combines Yoga Therapy and Nutritional medicine to get you on the right path to strong bones.
